Italian adventure. Burano
When we planned our road trip through Italy and chose Venice our first stop we knew that we also had to include Burano, even though we didn’t have that much time. We’d seen so many nice pictures of Burano on the Internet and decided that it was a must for us also. We know that Murano, with its glass is probably more famous, but we were surprised by Burano when we started researching for our trip.
Burano is an island 11 km far from Venice and the trip there is about 45 minutes. The easiest way to get there is by vaporetto. To get there you must take the 12th line at Fondamente Nuove station, the boat leaving every 30 minutes with stops in every island around the Venetian Lagoon. Initially we asked around at info points and various stations how to get there but since we got different answers an were told that we have to change lines we decided to go with the route we found out about when we did our research from the other travelers that shared their stories online.
The island is not big, is a small fishing village with about 3000 inhabitants and they are well known for lacemaking and embroidery, having a lace museum there. But what catches the eye the most are the houses. They are all so colorful that you forget that you’re so close to Venice and not in a candy cane fantasy. The legend says that the fishermen painted their houses this way to be able to see them from a distance when they were coming home from the see and also from distinguish them from the other fishermen’s houses. Even if the colors may seem chaotic, there’s a logic in all this and the villagers can’t paint their houses however they want because each color must be approved by the municipality first. So all you have to is walk on the streets, wait your turn for the pictures (because yes, Burano has become quite popular lately) and try to take the perfect picture capturing the houses reflected in the canals’ waters.
